Planning a Family Photography Session with Toddlers | Lennon & Fam | Ramsey, MN

One of my favorite families :) I had so much fun capturing Lennon’s 1 year photos at the Brooke Elizabeth Studio in Ramsey. This space is so special to work in. Its bright, warm, and has a nice romantic feel. It’s always a go to studio for me when my clients are needing to rent a space.

While editing this session I thought about how planning for a family session — especially with young children — can be challenging. So I wrote thing blog post to hopefully help :)

A Guide to Planning a Family Photography Session with Toddlers

As any parent knows, capturing those precious moments with your little ones can be both joyous and challenging. Toddlers are full of energy, curiosity, and spontaneity, which can make traditional photo shoots a bit of an adventure. But fear not! With some careful planning and a sprinkle (or two) of patience, you can create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.

  1. Choose the Right Photographer: The first step in planning a successful family photography session is to find the right photographer. Look for someone experienced in working with children, particularly toddlers. Ask for recommendations from friends or family, and be sure to check out their portfolio to ensure their style aligns with your vision.

  2. Select a Toddler-Friendly Location: When choosing a location for your photo session, think about places that are toddler-friendly and offer plenty of opportunities for exploration. Parks, botanical gardens, or even your own backyard can provide a relaxed and natural setting where your little ones can roam freely and be themselves.

  3. Timing is Everything: Plan your photo session around your toddler's schedule, aiming for a time when they are typically well-rested and content. Avoid scheduling it during nap time or mealtime, as hungry or tired toddlers are more likely to be fussy and uncooperative.

  4. Dress for Success: Coordinate your family's outfits in advance, keeping in mind the location and the season. Opt for comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement, and consider choosing colors and patterns that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. And don't forget to dress your toddler in something they feel comfortable and happy in – it can make all the difference in their demeanor during the shoot.

  5. Pack Wisely: Be prepared for anything by packing a bag of essentials for your photo session. Snacks, drinks, favorite toys, and a small first aid kit can help keep your toddler happy and entertained throughout the shoot. Don't forget to bring along any props or special items you want included in the photos, such as blankets, stuffed animals, or family heirlooms.

  6. Embrace Spontaneity: While it's important to have a general plan for your photo session, don't be afraid to let go of perfection and embrace the spontaneity of toddlerhood. Some of the most memorable and heartwarming photos are often the result of unexpected moments and genuine interactions. So relax, have fun, and trust your photographer to capture the magic of your family's unique bond.

Planning a family photography session with young children may have its challenges, but with a little foresight and flexibility, it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience. By choosing the right photographer, selecting a toddler-friendly location, timing the session carefully, dressing appropriately, packing wisely, and embracing spontaneity, you can create cherished memories that you'll treasure for years to come. So go ahead, capture those precious moments, and celebrate the joy of family!
